NIST INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

| Bangkok, Thailand The first full, not-for-profit IB World School in Thailand

NIST Kids Catering is a group of students utilising positive team spirit and passion for cooking to cater for and sell food at school events, in order to increase the nutritional value of students’ school meals in northern Thailand.

Our Profile

NIST Kids Catering is a group that initially started in 2012 as a cooking ECA at NIST, in which passionate secondary students, skilled or unskilled, could just experiment in the kitchen with ingredients and flavours, building up their personal skill level and culinary knowledge. In 2013, NIST Kids Catering established its name, and has since then been catering for on-campus events, as requested by school departments or teachers.

Our group was founded by former Food Design teacher, Ms. Natalie Lindon, with her great love and motivation to allow students to be passionate about food. After Ms. Lindon left NIST, the group was taken on by the current teacher mentor, Ms. Pony Kennedy, along with the student leader Michelle Voortman from Year 11. The group currently consists of 12 extremely dedicated, willing, motivated students eager to serve the NIST community.

Only at the beginning of 2017 did NIST Kids Catering make the decision of becoming an official service group. After going on the Year 12 service trip to Roi Et, Ms. Kennedy was very touched by one of the local schools. The students at the school only receive 20 Baht per day for their school lunches, which only provides them with meals largely lacking in the necessary nutrients and vitamins they need. Bringing this idea back to the NIST Kids Catering group at NIST, we had a stall at the Starry Nights community event, selling sweet snacks, with the proceeds going towards the school lunches for the local school in Roi Et.

Recently the group has been branching out and catering for themed events like the screening of a movie about the refugee crisis in 2017 where they prepared foods found in Arabian countries or like how they made halloween themed treats to raise money for the service trip during October. Catering The group is gearing up to keep going strong and is accepting members to join during the next academic year to keep providing good quality food for community events.

Which UN Sustainable Development Goals Do We Support?

To provide a clear context for the aims of service groups at NIST, we align our projects to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The SDGs work in the spirit of partnership and pragmatism to make the right choices now to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations.” This NIST group supports the following goals:

Jesse Scott, NIST Design Teacher, MYP Projects Coordinator.

The Personal Project is a chance for our Year 11 students to apply all the knowledge, skills, and experiences from the MYP and apply them towards a self-guided project of personal interest. The Personal Project Fair on January 18 was a chance for them to showcase and celebrate their projects. The evening session was particularly special as students did a great job sharing their learning with NIST parents. For the second consecutive year, NIST Kids Catering was my choice for catering this important event.

As I’ve come to expect, NIST Kids Catering provided an ample spread with a range of sweet and savoury dishes. The fare on offer, which included Chicken Meatballs, “Potted” Chocolate Pudding, Chile and Rosemary Vegan Cheese, and Mini Vegetarian Puff Pizzas, catered to the varied tastes and requirements of the diverse NIST community. Not only was the food delicious, their thoughtful and unique presentation of each dish showed care and attention to detail. NIST Kids Catering are highly capable and reliable food providers and I would most definitely recommend that you contact them for your next event.

Beth Dressler, Deputy Head Curriculum – PYP Coordinator

I loved the creativity of the items you created. The presentation was excellent and the taste was outstanding! I left the choices for the menu to you guys and I couldn’t be happier. The choices were creative and so tasty. I loved the way everything looked, especially the fruit parfaits. They looked great! The quality was worth the price we paid for the ingredients. I will order from you guys again! The portion sizes & amounts were perfect. We only needed finger foods & what you provided were excellent.
I think you catered well to people with different diets, this was excellent & unexpected. I honestly didn’t expect vegan options so thank you! You guys were amazing-from start to finish. I loved having you serve the food as well. This was a nice touch! Thank you!
