Operation Smile NIST works alongside Operation Smile Thailand, sharing the aim of working towards a world where no child suffers from lack of access to safe surgery.
Approximately one in every 700 babies in Thailand is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Children with these facial deformities who do not receive reconstructive surgery often have difficulty breathing, drinking, eating and speaking. As a result, many suffer from malnutrition, medical and psychological problems.
The Operation Smile NIST service group consist of approximately 24 dedicated students. The club is lead by Mei Lin Nall and Gaia Seguso. Every year, group members participate in mission trips to rural areas of Thailand in support of Operation Smile Thailand. Additionally, major events are held, both at NIST and in collaboration with other international schools. Operation Smile NIST continues to grow and come up with creative new ideas to fundraise and support the cause.
